Seaweed

ORCA-SP

Submerged Protective Industrial Pod Structure

Seatech has designed, patented and certified an offshore marine structure that delivers seaweed cultivation on an industrial scale through the most rigorous of conditions. The pod structure is designed in order to protect the young spores as well as controlling the operating conditions such as weather conditions, depth, irradiation, Ph and nutrient values for each given location.

Each location will be specifically analyzed to ensure that the natural organic and biological process is optimized for the given environmental conditions. Because of the strength, lifetime and protective nature of the pod Seatech has named this technology ORCA-SP™.

ORCA-SP™ is designed and manufactured to the highest quality standards and uses recycled materials for its construction which can be manufactured via a locally placed extrusion machine. All ORCA-SP™ have a long shelf life and can be recycled into new ORCA-SP™ when they reach the end of life.

Regenerating and maintaining healthy marine habitats through the absorption of CO2. A natural process during the growth of seaweed.

Filtering CO2 from the oceans

Benefits ORCA-SP

The Seaweed Growth Structure is a patented self-depth regulating circular framework with tensioned ropes giving the structural strength to the framework whilst at the same time providing the required growing surface for the seaweed.

The design of the circular framework, as well as the configuration of the structural ropes, is customized for the ocean conditions and ideal growth environment at the location of the seaweed farm.

Seaweed is grown off-shore allowing an improved availability of land. This can then be used as a replacement for land-based crops.

During the seaweed growth cycle, it can regenerate the quality of seawater resulting in coral reef recovery and a healthy environment for marine life.

The presence of seaweed in a marine environment, aids in the recovery of the marine ecosystems, providing shelter and nutrients for marine life.

Specification Seaweed growth using ORCA-SP™ Conventional
Yield Yield between 800 to 1,000 ton per hectare p.a. Typical yield 25 to 50 tons per hectare p.a.
Growth Submerged growth (as done in nature) Surface growth (unnatural)
Parameter Variable growth depth set to optimize growth rate No variation of growth depth
Location Growing locations in any depth of water Growing locations only in shallow water
Protection Submerged growth, protected from weather events Surface growth, susceptible to destructive impact
Exposure Submerged growth reduces exposure to pollution Surface growth allows exposure to pollution
Positioning Variable growth positioning (movement with tides) Only fixed shallow structures
Automation Allows for automated harvest Manual harvest

By growing seaweed offshore, we remove the necessity to use large amounts of land to grow crops. This includes crops for both animal and human consumption.
